You can help raise money for Taracoonee by selling items you no longer want or need online on GUMTREE. Emma Borley tells you how:
It’s easy (and free) to sell items anywhere in Australia on ‘Gumtree’. Just set up an account and log in. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do.
- Type ‘gumtree’ into google
- Click on link for ‘gumtree’
- Click on ‘register’ (top right hand corner of the screen)
- You will be asked for some log in information. Set up your email address and password that you would like to use when logging on. It will also ask you for a phone number. Always give your mobile.
- Then it is as simple as posting your ad. So click on ‘post an ad’ and it will prompt you to click on what you are trying to sell or give away.
- Once you have clicked on …eg desk, it will ask you for a price. I usually give a price but also click on the ‘negotiable’ button, as everyone likes a bargain if they can get one.
- Then you will be asked for what it is
- Then you will be asked to type out a description of what you are selling. Try and be as specific as you can (with measurements if possible) as well as what material it is made out of etc. Be as detailed as possible and then you won’t get questions or emails re your product.
- Then it asks you to upload photos. Make sure the photos are small in size. It allows you to log onto your computer and choose the file. Put several photos of your item, with lots of different angles if possible.
- Then follow the prompts that gumtree gives you and then the final step will be to press ‘list’.
- You will be sent an email confirmation that your product has been listed. May take a few hours before it goes live.
- You have a couple of hours if you want to edit your listing for free and then every edit you make you will be charged. Otherwise the actual listing is free.
- Avoid sending products to people. I usually say pick up only and then you collect the money from them. You can also set up a pay pal account if you wish. Again it talks you through how to do it.
- The listing process will prompt you to state how you want to be contacted by potential buyers (choose what suits you: email, sms or by phone).
- The longer the listing is on gumtree the further back your listing goes in the pages. When you first list it, it will be the first one that comes up under your search. You can pay money if you want to highlight your product or keep it in front in the pages. I generally don’t do this. But you can if you want to.
- When your item has sold,‘delete’ the listing.
TIPS
- If nobody has contacted you about your item within 5 days, consider reducing the price
- Only provide your full address when you are organising collection of your item
